Volunteer

Trained, screened, and held to the same confidentiality as staff. That is not bureaucracy — it is what makes a shelter safe.

Volunteer roles

Trained advocate support

Assist advocates with intake support, resident check-ins, and daytime coverage. Requires completed trauma-informed care and victim advocacy training.

Children's programming

Support age-appropriate activities for children staying at the shelter. Requires background check and training.

Community education

Help deliver outreach and awareness programs at schools, churches, workplaces and community events.

Donation and drive coordination

Sort, organize and inventory in-kind donations, and help run seasonal drives.

Events and fundraising

Set up, staff and break down awareness events, community trainings and fundraisers.

Professional skills

Accountants, attorneys, counselors, IT professionals, translators, cosmetologists and trades — tell us what you do and we will tell you honestly whether we can use it.

How it works

From inquiry to first shift

  1. Send an inquiryTell us what you would like to do and roughly how much time you have.
  2. Application and screeningIncluding a background check for any role involving residents or children.
  3. TrainingTrauma-informed care and victim advocacy. This is one of our five program goals, and it applies to volunteers as much as staff.
  4. PlacementMatched to a role that fits your availability and what the shelter needs.

All volunteers complete an application, a screening process, and training on trauma-informed care and victim advocacy before working with residents. Confidentiality is required without exception.
